2004
Corporate Meeting a Success
ACT Medical Group, PA
clinicians meet throughout the year regionally and also meet
throughout the year by specialty to receive ongoing education and to
discuss service quality improvement.
There is but one time each year that ACT has a meeting for
100% of staff within our corporation.
This year we met at the Grandover Resort in Greensboro for a
weekend of Continuing Education, Company Updates, Round-table
discussion on continuing in ACT’s mission for Continuous
Improvement and Camaraderie.
Of special note is
the presentation by Dr. Richard Aronson, Chief Medical Officer for
Choice Health and Medical Director for Moses H. Cone.
His motivational speech, titled Post-Acute Care: Evolving
Roles for Excellence spoke to the fact that mental health as a
specialty is an integral part of every long-term care facility and
should be integrated into the general operations of each facility.
ACT must embrace the values of each facility we serve and
each facility we serve must be aware of the large impact a quality
mental health provider can make in the success of their operations.
Aggressive mental health provision can enhance quality
indicators for nursing facilities, increase staff retention and
satisfaction, increase family and resident satisfaction with overall
facility experience, can positively impact results of restorative
and rehabilitative programs and can create fiscal and quality
outcome success for facilities.

Geriatric Specialty Team Meeting
Our
country is aging. The average life expectancy is 77 years
and at this time only 5% of older adults live in nursing homes.
One in five Americans will be over the age of 65 by the year 2050.
On May 10, 2004 Guilford Co, AHEC hosted the 9th Annual Geriatric
Mental Health Conference, the topic was "Focusing on the Quality
of Life for the Older Adult in a Changing Environment".
Participants represented private organizations, Division of Social
Services, long term care facilities and various community groups.
Organizations came together to develop ideas to assist the older
adult to live in a safe and fulfilling environment.
The North Carolina Mental Health Reform Act was presented and
discussed. This bill provides for changes in the mental
health community to care for older adults by establishing
special care units, some of which will assist with difficult
behaviors and the Geriatric Specialty Teams. These teams
will work in the community assisting and coordinating services for
older adults both in long term care facilities and those living
independently.
Mahatma Ghandi stated "You must be the change you wish to see
in the world". The Geriatric Specialty Teams (GST) work
to provide a continuum of services. This includes caregivers
and community education, crises intervention and support.
The team focuses on client choices and options for a living
environment which will best provide for the individuals needs.
Identifying the
needs of the community is an ongoing process. Some of those
needs are:
1.
Limited staff trained in geriatric psychiatry who are able to
assess and work with clients exhibiting challenging behaviors
or cognitive decline.
2.
Limited community resources to meet the psychosocial needs of the
older adult.
People
are living longer due to advances in treatments and medical care.
North Carolina Health and Human Services charge the GST to develop
strategies and identify barriers to services for older adults
living in the community. The GST working closely with
state health providers are assisting with implementation of
community services to provide support for the older
adult to live successfully in the community of their choice.
